Benefits of Upside Down Tomatoes

March 19th, 2009 | 5 Comments | Posted in Tomato News

Many people have asked us what the benefit of upside down tomato planting is. We in turn ask them whats so great about planting in the ground. =)

The main benefit is you back. With hanging plants you never need to bend over to pick tomatoes again. As I have been getting older its been harder and harder to take care of my garden. From harvesting to weeding its all put quite a strain on my back over the years. This is the whole reason we starting upside down tomato planting, I just couldn’t keep up with my old garden and it was falling apart. Now I am able to enjoy my garden and not worry about my back.

What we didn’t think of were the other benefits that we didn’t expect but should have been common sense if we had thought about it.

  1. No Weeds! I don’t know why it didn’t dawn on us but by haging your plants upside down the only soil that is expoed is the tiny hole in the bottom where the plant grows. Its impossible for weeds to gown out of this tiny upside down section which menas I will never have to deweed my plants again. A very nice thought.
  2. Less Bugs! Ok so if you have flying pests in your garden they will still be able to reach your plants. There really is no way to stop all the bugs and baddies but by taking our plants off the ground we were able to keep all of the ground bugs out. No more slugs or snails or other baddies. This has been a great benefit for our tomatoes.
