DIY Upside Down Tomato Planter
If you are wanting to try upside down tomato planting this season and you find your self to be quite handy then these are the plans for you. Personally I will just buy another tospy turvy if mine dies but many people has asked for instructions on how to build their own set up. So here are images describing what to do step by step.
- Find a plastic planter or bucket or your choice. Make sure you have a sturdy method to hang it. When full of dirt and plants your planter will weight quite a lot so make sure you have a very sturdy rope or somthing made of metal to support the plant.
- Next your going to need a drill with a hole saw on it. I recommend a 1″ to 2″ saw to make a nice hole and give the plant room to grow.
- Now you need some sturdy fabric to cover the hole. Some people use coffee filters, some use land scraper fabric, or root blocking cloth. Anything will do so long as you can cover the bottom and then some and cut a slit in the middle.
- Before you hang your plant it needs to be about 1 foot in length. This means you either need to start it in the ground and then dig it up and transfer it and its root ball intact. Or you need a way to fill your planter with dirt and then flip it over. I personally fill the planter to the top with dirt then use a piece of scrap wood to cover the top so I can flip it over and place it on the ground. This means my planter is full of dirt being held in by my board and the cloth slit is now facing upwards like normal.
- After your plant is of proper height you can hang your upside down tomato planter anywhere with sun light and add plants to the top if you like. Make sure you have a very secure object to hang the plant from! A full planter of dirt and tomatoes can weigh quite a lot.
